It travels from the inner ear to the brainstem and out through a bone located on the side of the skull called the temporal bone. Pathology of the cochlear nerve may result from inflammation, infection, or injury. The labyrinth can be divided by layer or by region. The bony labyrinth, or osseous labyrinth, is the network of passages with bony walls lined with periosteum. The three major parts of the bony labyrinth are the vestibule of the ear, the semicircular canals, and the cochlea.
