This will allow you to turn the wheel freely in either direction, as well as allow the wheel to stay at any degree of rotation, while letting go. This helps to ensure that it's calibrated properly.

I can handle high horsepower, no-assist cars on a knife edge of slip angle in other sims, but a slight over rotation in this car is either a slow, infuriating catch, or an inevitable spin. Footage of the real cars vs. how they feel/behave in iRacing doesn't match IMHO.
